Agriculture is a business…and a strong part of our economy. It is time we develop a more significant strategy, encompassing this huge resource and foundation into a structured economic development plan. We are missing the components that will harness this resource to its fullest: Research, Tech transfer, Commercialization, and Marketing. We must understand we are in a new economy. Thinking differently about what we have is the first step, thinking differently about what we do with it is the second step. Building our niche in this global economy is our challenge, and fostering creativity and innovation will carry us at the end of the day. Do we have strategies in place to bring us this end result? Not yet. But if we choose to rebuild a new model, we can get there relatively quickly – that is the good news. We just need to be willing to make the move.
