South Dakota derives a large portion of its economy from tourism. Every summer, millions of people traverse to our state hoping to catch a glimpse of a buffalo, or the majestic gaze of Mount Rushmore. The sales tax and revenue generated from tourism reached an all-time record in 2007, hitting $941 million

This year, fuel prices hit record highs, and people are beginning to feel it at the gas pumps. Despite the high prices though, people have been inquiring about South Dakota vacation manuals…indicating their desire to “play” in our great state. We need to continue to invest and protect the environment resource our state has, positioning ourselves as a great attraction for years to come…
